Dismantling of walls and partitions in Portugal

Most walls and partitions in Portugal are made of hollow brick. These partitions can be dismantled if necessary, since they are not load-bearing walls and are not capable of performing the function of load-bearing walls. It is important to understand that concrete walls cannot be broken down, since the situation is the opposite there. They just carry a load-bearing function. Also, ventilation shafts and sewer pipe areas cannot be dismantled. These places must remain intact.

During the redevelopment, it is important to adhere to the typology of the apartment, which is determined by the number of living rooms. That is, if during the redevelopment you reduce the number of rooms or, on the contrary, increase them, this must be agreed upon in the "camera municipal". For this, you also need to draw up an architectural project, which will be approved in the camera municipal.

The transfer of plumbing equipment during the renovation of apartments in Porto is usually not agreed upon. But it is important to understand that you cannot make a bathroom in any place where you think it is necessary. These works are very dependent on the location of plumbing communications: first of all, this is a sewer riser.

It is also important to remember that the floors in apartments in Portugal are usually not very level. Therefore, in the case of dismantling the partition, it may turn out that the floor in the combined space will be at different levels and will have to be leveled. If you want to keep the main floor covering in the rooms and there is only a need for dismantling, then it is important to understand that you may simply not find exactly the same tiles or exactly the same parquet, and thus you will have to make a third covering on the dismantled area.

The same situation can happen with ceilings. Especially if they are covered with plasterboard. Because in different rooms the plasterboard can be covered at different levels. In this case, if you dismantle the partition between the hall and the kitchen (as often happens lately), the ceiling levels may differ.

It is also important to understand how exactly and what kind of floor plinth you will have after dismantling the partition. For example, in the hall it can be 5 cm high and made of MDF, and in the kitchen - 4 cm high and made of metal or plastic. All this must be thought out in advance, so that during the renovation you do not waste time on additional approvals, but carry out the work as quickly as possible.
